Something just right for this threshold, the passa Something just right for this threshold, the passage from the season of darkness into the season of light. Humanity has always told the same story. Across cultures, across communities, through different symbols and different languages. We actually carry archetypal maps of passage: the descent into the underworld, into Hades - dissolution, wandering in the dark, and then, the return to the world above. A journey no one asked for, yet everyone needed. The dying-and-returning deity is a collective archetype of the human psyche: transformation, the crossing into the new through the death of the old. Ishtar/Inanna, whose descent into darkness moves me deeply. At each of the seven gates, she leaves something behind. She is stripped of her garments, her jewels, her emblems of power, her identity does not protect her. When she dies, she is hung on a hook like a piece of meat, which, on some level, we all are. Inanna is revived, she rises from the dark, but she must name someone to take her place below. She chooses the one who did not mourn her. The one who represents the world that did not fall apart with her. (Dumuzi embodies fertility: life that continues, despite the drama of the individual.) That we pass through darkness and return transformed does not mean others are obliged to change with us. Life goes on - that is its nature. I feel her pain deeply, and I understand her choice, though there is a certain cruelty in it. Sometimes, what did not grow with you cannot go on with you. Myth gives Dumuzi a cosmic role: for part of the year he rises from the underworld, and we enter the season of light and fertility. Then he must return, taking life back with him. And Ishtar… she is the one who knows life from the other side - from the side of death. She regains her power, her crown, but she knows that the passage through darkness is walked alone, and barefoot. She carries courage now, and wisdom, and power, but perhaps most of all, she has passed through transformation and returned alive. From then on, life is lived with the awareness of death, not separate from life, but woven into it. The descent is part of the ascent.

For years, it felt like a strange mix of joy and death; something I couldn’t fully grasp. Now I understand you, Marzanna. And I am ready to receive your gift. I devote myself to you in this very specific moment of the year, and my life. Unlike Persephone or Ishtar, Marzanna is not a goddess who returns from the underworld. This is not that kind of transformation. Not a cyclical passage. In Slavic tradition, Marzanna is kiII3d. Ritually destroyed. Burned. Drowned. Dissolved. There is nothing left to gather. This is not about rebirth and comforting promise of renewal, the soft illusion that we will return to something familiar and be held again. This is about allowing total collapse, when everything falls apart, and that is the only thing that now matters. I respect you deeply, Marzanna. I see you. I feel your power. You do not know that spring will come. Because spring does not come for you. You come here to die, like Jesus. That is all. Thank you for your gift. Her power offers you the grace of courage when you are ending a cycle, when you allow something to truly end, even if part of you still wants to keep it alive. And I am walking this path right now. I want to burn my old self and dance on the ashes. My ritual of destroying Marzanna this year will be wild, deep, liberating, because I’m ending the cycle. Thank you, Marzanna, for walking with me. For carving this difficult and beautiful path. Thank you for your courage. And thank you for mine. Let us die now, Marzanna. Today, I became her priestess and I fell like sht for choosing to put this powerful and so important for me goddess on sale. I will never forget this (another!) lesson from her. I bought three sculptures from Marta and they arrived really quickly from Poland to Singapore. One sculpture arrived broken, and Marta immediately promised to make me a new one. These sculptures are absolutely AMAZING! I had been looking for unique African sculptures that were not made of wood. Marta took great pleasure in creating exacting what I wanted. They are so detailed and life like. It is evident that a lot of thought and time was put into these beautiful creations. My order came sooner than expected even during COVID19.
